  1. Check Hoses and Appliances

The first step to preventing water damage before it begins is checking your hoses on household appliances. These can include washing machines and dishwashers. Make sure to look for any wear and tear or even small leaks.

  1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Ensure that no leaves or other debris is blocking your gutters and downspouts from draining properly.

  1. Install Leak Detectors

Using water sensors or leak detectors are a great way to catch leaks in hard-to-reach places before significant damage can occur.

  1. Know Your Water Shut-off Valves

Familiarize yourself with all the water shut-off valves in your home, so you know where to go in case of an emergency leak.

  1. Monitor Water Bills

Make sure to keep an eye on your water bills! A sudden increase in price could indicate a hidden leak.

  1. Fix Leaks Promptly

If you uncover a leak - even just a small one - fixing it sooner rather than later will prevent further damage. If you suspect a leak somewhere you cant see, hire a plumber who does leak detection to catch it promptly.

  1. Inspect Sump Pump

Regular testing of your sump pump will ensure that it is still functioning properly in case of high groundwater levels.

  1. Insulate Pipes

Protect any exposed pipes during the winter to protect them from temperature drops. This can be done by wrapping the pipes in insulation.

  1. Check for Moisture and Mold

If you are seeing condensation or signs of mold in a certain area, inspect for leaks!

  1. Maintain Proper Caulking

Last but certainly not least, check the caulking around your windows and doors to prevent water infiltration.
